A study and forum on the relevance and challenges of mixed marriages reveal insights into the dynamics of interracial unions in Malaysia, writes SHARIFAH ARFAH

MALAYSIANS have been warned to “think 1,000 times” before getting into a mixed marriage.

The call came from Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Utama Rais Yatim last year. He cautioned Malaysians against entering into such unions.
He quoted a study done between 1995 and 1998 which claimed that only three out of 10 mixed marriages in Malaysia succeed.

Meeting Oh Meeting

penat

This is my second MACMA monthly meeting after the AGM. Well, yesterday was a bit tiring. I took a second flight from KB to KLIA (MAS was cheaper than Air Asia for that day) which was supposed to take off at 11.35am. However, due to many passengers (a big group going for Umrah), the Firefly flight to Penang and Subang were delayed. Therefore, my flight took off at about 12.15pm. By the time I reached KLIA at about 1.10pm, I had to run to the bus station which was not that near (unlike LCCT, just outside the building – more convenience). I was lucky to catch the 1.30pm bus to KL Sentral. The journey took about an hour. I had headache and was really-really hungry (don’t know why as I often skip lunch but never felt that hungry).

Revert at the age of 97

Madam Mariam Goe @ Goe Long Wa converted to Islam at the age of 97. She converted on the first day of Chinese New Year in 2005. The first question that crossed my mind was how Bro Mohd Amin Ang, who converted 3 years ago, convinced his mother to embrace Islam?

Mariam Goe

He didn’t have to explain much when we saw his wife, Sister Rohani taking care of her mother-in-law. She took good care of her mother-in-law with love, cleaned and fed her everyday even before Madam Mariam Goe embraced Islam. Sister Rohani showed a very good example of Islam to her mother-in-law. Bro Amin Ang loved and respected her mother even more after he converted to Islam.

11.1.11 – 11.11

My wife’s theses were bound on the 10th of January, done by 3.50pm that day. It was too late to drive to the Postgraduate Office as they are closed at 4pm. Therefore, we had to deposit the theses the following day. Well, being a Chinese who loves “nice” numbers, 11.1.11 is perfect. What we didn’t realised (not planned) that we actually submitted the theses at 11.11am sharp (after paying $45 fees for hard bound copy on the 2nd floor and Postgrad Office is on the 5th floor). Well, at least it is easy to remember 11.1.11-11.11, a time when my wife submitted her PhD theses. Congrats, my dear.

Happy New Year

RMC 1988

I have been busy last year until my website has been hacked. Not only my home directory was hacked, but also my data has been erased (all of them!). Anyhoo, I have moved the hosting to another secured hosting (I hope so). I will write more once I restored the cinamuslim.com website (which was also neglected for almost a year!). What can I say? Studying full time, working part-time, and looking after my family at the same time was not easy.
